Yoshitaka Kato

History

After graduating from university, Yoshitaka Kato worked at a ceramics machinery manufacturer for three years, where he learned the basics of ceramic engineering. He then joined his family business, Maruichi, where he produces onigawara and and is engaged in producing omigawara and practicing the art of kinyaki, in which gold is fused to tile prochuts in the firing process. His works appear on famous shrines and temples including Kyoto's Chion-in.

My philosophy

In pursuit of a truly unique kimen

Yoshitaka Kato's paramount theme has been the pursuit of originality; how far can he go in integrating his unique worldview without destroying the traditional appearance of onigawara, with its 1,400-year history? He is also meticulous and demanding when it comes to the sense of luster his pieces effect when placed on the roof, so is completely uncompromising in the delicate finishing process. Kato continues to work towards a kimen that one could find nowhere else, one that he and he alone can create.

I want to expand the possibility of orge mask
